# When an AI answer cites you, check what the citation supports By Maria Marnovora AI-assisted article. An AI answer that links to your website is a useful observation. It is not yet evidence that the answer described your business correctly, recommended your service or sent you a customer. Read the claim next to the citation before you decide what the result means. Save the question and the answer together A screenshot of your brand name loses context. Record the complete question, the assistant, the date, the language and whether a web search mode was used. Keep the response and the exact page it linked to. For a UAE business, location changes can matter to the question you are testing. “A restaurant in Dubai Marina” and “a restaurant near me” are different requests. Record the location context you supplied rather than assuming the assistant used the location you intended. Separate three observations ObservationWhat to record MentionYour business appears by name CitationA link points to a page you control RecommendationThe answer suggests choosing or considering your business These can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. An answer might cite your opening-hours page while recommending a competitor. Another might mention your business without providing a clickable source. Preserve that distinction in your report. Open the cited page Look for the evidence behind the nearby claim. Does the page say what the answer says it says? Is a price conditional? Is a service limited to one location? Did the answer confuse the publisher of a comparison with a business being compared? Copy the short relevant passage into your private audit notes and link to its source. Mark the result as supported, partly supported, unsupported or unclear. These are suggested review labels, not an industry scoring standard. Correct the source before chasing the answer If your own page is ambiguous, repair the ambiguity. Place opening hours beside the correct location. Explain what a quoted fee includes. Distinguish current services from old announcements. Keep a record of the change so you can compare later observations. If the source is accurate but the answer is not, record the mismatch and use the assistant’s feedback mechanism if appropriate. Rewriting every page after one unusual response can make an otherwise useful website worse. Repeat with a consistent method Use the same small question set over time and preserve the conditions. Report counts as counts: “linked in three of ten recorded responses” is more specific than “30% market visibility”. Your chosen questions are a sample, not the whole market. Google explains that its AI search experiences may explore related queries and use different techniques. This is one reason to document the exact experience tested rather than treat all AI answers as a single ranking list. Read its AI features guidance (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). Finish by checking outcomes separately: visits, enquiries and useful customer conversations. A well-supported citation is encouraging, but it is a different measure from revenue.
